What is a Veterans Cottage?
A Veteran Cottage is a dignified alternative to the temporary group facilities. It is small permanent house, which is safe, affordable and can be assembled quickly.
There are many designs for Veteran Cottages, to meet a range of needs. Veteran Cottages are safe and durable. The Veteran Cottage can be built in a one or two bedroom configuration.
The Veteran Cottage is affordable housing that can be built nationwide. A veteran cottage will provide permanent homes for homeless veterans and help restore them to their home communities; meeting individual needs and addressing the need of an affordable place to live for those veterans who need a fresh start in life. Communities who are interested in the big picture of affordable housing initiatives for the homeless veterans in their area can use the Veteran Cottages as a working alternative to temporary shelters.
The Benefits of a Veterans Cottage!
Safe and structurally secure, cottages sit on a permanent foundation that will withstand storms just like a larger home in the community. Veteran Cottages are built to last like any home and to the same standards of each community's building codes. A Veteran Cottage creates an asset for the veterans and gives them a home to return to after a day of working. It helps to restore a feeling of self worth.
The Veteran Cottages are designed to be a dignified alternative after interim shelters. We have the opportunity to provide more than mere shelter. Veterans do not want a hand out, but a hand up, and this program is designed to do just that. Selected homeless veterans who have a willing desire, are entered into the program and help with the construction process and work with a contractor in different levels of trade to learn new job skills. Upon construction completion, the veteran can then enter a work benefit process for a Veteran Cottage. The veteran must complete an 18 month work study program and make a minimum payment on the Veteran Cottage, which on average would be $175-$225 per month and maintain the home in good condition both by preventive maintenance and covering the cost of utilities for the 18 months. During this same 18 month period, the veteran must also continue with treatment for any physical and mental condition, such as PTSD until such time as he has completed this treatment. Upon completion of the 18-month term a review board helps the veteran complete an application for a VA-guaranteed loan.
Built into this program are three key benefits (factors) that assist the veteran in successfully moving forward. These are: |
- The veteran has established job security
- Recent credit history
- Most importantly, the veteran now has re-gained a sense of self worth that is rewarded by a generous gift of 50% equity of the home’s actual construction cost. The loan amount is returned into the program to continue the program for other veterans.
